Channel 07 · Shortcut ⌘7
APP UPDATER
Short answer
CleanUai’s channel 07 shows updates for all your apps in one list, from three sources: each app’s Sparkle feed, the App Store and Homebrew. Update one at a time or press Update all, skip a version and read the release notes. When an app is replaced, the old version goes to the Trash.
The three sources
- Sparkle: many apps from outside the App Store publish a feed (the
SUFeedURLinside the app). CleanUai reads that feed straight from the vendor’s site. - App Store: for apps installed from the Mac App Store, it queries Apple’s public lookup API by the app’s identifier.
- Homebrew: for apps that have a cask, it queries Homebrew’s public API.
These lookups go from your Mac straight to those sources. Your list of installed apps never goes through CleanUai’s servers.
How it updates
- App Store apps: it opens the App Store on the right page.
- Sparkle apps: it downloads the DMG or ZIP from the feed, checks the signature (
codesignand Gatekeeper) and swaps the app while it’s closed. - The old version goes to the Trash, so you can undo it.
Outdated apps notice
The menu bar agent can tell you, at most once a day, when apps are out of date. It comes off: turn it on in Settings if you want it.
Step by step
- Open channel 07 (
⌘7). It looks for updates on its own. - See each app’s current version, new version and source. Open the release notes if you like.
- Press Update on one app, or Update all.
- Don’t want a version? Skip it, and it won’t show up again.
Questions
Does CleanUai replace Homebrew?
No. It queries Homebrew’s public API to know whether an app with a cask has a new version, but it doesn’t install formulae or touch your Homebrew setup.
Are release notes translated?
They show in the language the vendor published them in. Many publish only in English.
Does updating apps need a license?
Not during the 7-day free trial. After it, seeing updates stays free; updating asks for a license.
